The Power of a Good Neutral

— by Stearns & Foster on Jul 12, 2021

In our opinion, there’s never a wrong time for a bedroom refresh. Seize the day by learning how to boldly and strategically decorate with neutrals. Yes, you truly can have the best of both worlds! By laying decorative groundwork with a tried and true beige, grey or even greige (the combination you never knew you needed), you’re giving yourself complete artistic freedom to decorate the rest of your room with bold accents – as often as you want. Not to mention, neutrals haven’t been the same since materials like metal and oak hit the scene. Essentially, the world is your neutral oyster.

This decorative approach provides flexibility, versatility and total control over your space. So if you find yourself in need of a style overhaul (say farmhouse to modern deco), you won’t have to start from square one. Think of incorporating neutrals in your home as self-care – less work for future you. We encourage you to use these low-key hues however they fit into your home the best. Furniture and bedding are always two great places to start, as they tend to take up the most visual space. Neutrals never go out of style, making it that much easier to swap out trends – or if you like to stick to the same design for a while, your neutrals won’t need to be replaced for a long time.

Neutrals don't have to be specific to bedding! If you’d rather have fun bedding or a boldly colored desk, a neutral area rug can take you a long way. It's all about balance! Pro tip: try choosing a neutral for one of the larger pieces in your room, like an accent chair or area rug. This is an especially valuable technique if you find yourself constantly wanting to realign your feng shui… or just can’t make up your mind! Inspiration can strike at any moment. And, who doesn’t need a push to buy that nearly blinding chartreuse accent chair?

We’ve gathered some helpful tips for balancing our favorite neutrals with more daring hues:

  1. Be bold, but make it functional. Let’s face it, you’re much more likely to buy an in-your-face accent piece if it lights up your nightstand and allows you to indulge in the latest edition of Vogue. Decorative boxes can also be functional homes for less-than-pretty bedroom necessities, like melatonin and retainers.
  2. Nature calls, we answer. Embrace and invest in seasonal pieces – no one is saying you need a Jack O’Lantern throw pillow, but allowing yourself to buy seasonally appropriate pieces may force you to show your space some love more often (well, at least four times a year). Allow your atmosphere to bloom with the seasons by changing out warm and cool tones, artificial flowers and more. Having your go-to neutral staples in place will make this process as easy as can be!
  3. Trinkets–can you ever have enough? Trinkets and smaller pieces make great decorative accents, because they’re easy to store and can be effortlessly interchanged (think books, candles, pictures). There’s an infinite amount of possibilities when sprucing up your room with an array of frames, scents and sentimental keepsakes.
  4. Pick your battles. It’s tough, especially when you gravitate toward bold décor, to not buy every eccentric piece you see. Discerning between pieces that will add value to your space and complete your sanctuary, and pieces that may end up in next summer’s garage sale, is a must when complementing neutral spaces.
  5. Art imitates life – and vice versa. A meaningful (or just downright gorgeous) piece of art can completely turn around your space. Unless it’s an unusually heavy piece, art is easy to switch out while remaining timeless. Finding the right piece of art is no easy feat, but you’ll know it when you see it. One of our favorite things about art is that there truly are no rules. Follow your vision and have some fun!

A healthy mix of neutrals and colors makes for a happy home. Let your space evolve with you as a decorator, reflecting your style and the things that mean the most to you. We hope you found these tips helpful and will share with us how you’re #UncoveringExceptional. We can’t wait to see how you style your favorite neutrals! P.S. – ours is navy velvet.
