Selecting the Best Pillow Size for your Bed
— by Stearns & Foster on Apr 14, 2022
Your bedroom: a place that creates a sense of peace and relaxation as soon as you walk in, leaving any stress or worry from your day behind. This tranquil space should also reflect your design style. You must consider countless tiny details: wall color, flooring, accent rugs, décor, your bed size… and the list goes on and on.
Naturally, the bed ranks as our number one focus. Much like selecting your room’s decor, there are several elements needed to curate your perfect comfort oasis with your bed. Debatably the most complex of decisions? Your pillows. Though it may seem simple, the right throw pillows, shams, shapes, and sizes play a pivotal role in your comfort experience. And the key players? Your main sleeping pillows. With three popular sizing options – standard, queen, and king – remember to consider the size of your mattress when choosing your pillows.
First, shop for the pillow that’s best for your sleeping needs. Do you enjoy a soft plush feel, or do you need something with more structure? Are you a side, back, stomach, or multi-position sleeper? Finding the perfect pillow to enhance your sleeping experience should always be at the top of your priority list when searching for bedding.
Properly sized pillows can enhance your sleep space and elevate the overall look more than you might realize. Standard pillows are the smallest option, measuring 20” x 26” and will be best suited for twin, twin long, or full beds. Measuring roughly 4 inches longer at 20” x 30”, queen-size pillows are the perfect fit for a queen-size bed, or smaller sizes like full, twin XL, and twin (depending on how many you’ll need). If you have a king mattress, using king-size pillows (20” x 36”) will typically be the best fit. Standard-size pillows on a king-size mattress will leave nearly a foot of extra space on each side of your pillows at the head of your bed. With king-size pillows, you’ll only have two extra inches per side.
Some find they prefer to use queen pillows with their king mattress, or pair king pillows with their queen mattress. Your pillows are your preference, and you should opt for what feels comfortable. In these instances, combat design challenges by opting for larger shams – or place coordinating pillows in front of your main pillows if they’re too large or small.
Selecting the perfect accessories may seem a bit daunting. We recommend starting simple, collecting inspiration, and compiling a mood board. From there, start with one piece, or pillow, at a time. Before you know it, your nighttime retreat will feel complete.
