Proper Hydration for a Great Night’s Sleep

— by Stearns & Foster on Oct 30, 2025

Most are aware that consuming water is a vital component of health — and neglecting the fact can result in headaches, dizziness, cramps, lethargy, and other severe ailments.* But did you know that proper hydration can also improve your sleep? The electrolytes you replenish can enhance your quality of rest, providing a deeper, more fulfilling slumber.** Water is essential for a better well-being, but how do you ensure you drink enough?

Use a Water Bottle

Keeping a water bottle close at hand is an easy first step. The constant visual reminder can prompt you to drink more, plus it allows you to stretch your legs as you refill throughout the day. If you’re the forgetful type and leave your bottle at home, consider using two — one at home and one at work.

Add a Humidifier

A humidifier in your room can be useful for more than remedying a stuffy nose. The extra moisture can further your effort to consume liquids as your nasal passages and skin help absorb the added water in the air. To make the most of it, be sure to remove any makeup from your face before bed.

Replenish After Working Out

While exercising has numerous health benefits, be mindful to consume liquids before, during, and after your session to replace what’s lost. As a bonus, proper hydration and restful sleep contribute to better muscle recovery, providing a healthy boost without extra exertion.

Practice Moderation

While some people believe any liquid moves them toward their daily intake goal, there are beverages that do the opposite. Alcohol is a primary example of this, and limiting yourself will help you stay hydrated. In addition to alcohol, caffeinated drinks lead to dehydration. You may already consume coffee in the morning hours to avoid a sleepless night, but sodas with lunch and dinner can also impact your bedtime. Even caffeine-free soft drinks contain sugar, which impedes hydration.

Watch the Clock

While staying hydrated can help you enjoy deeper sleep, too much water before bedtime will have an adverse effect on your rest if nature calls. If you consistently find yourself thirsty, try to drink earlier in the evening and limit yourself to a glass of water before you turn in for the day.

Hydration doesn’t have to be difficult, but sometimes mindful consumption is necessary. When in doubt, drink more water — you’ll be amazed at the difference it can make!
