Incorporating Color into Your Designs

— by Stearns & Foster on Jul 30, 2025

In an era of predominantly neutral palettes, many may want to branch out, yet face challenges incorporating color into their decor. Your limit is your imagination, giving you plenty of options as unique as you are – but finding a starting point is difficult when the world is your oyster. Thankfully, we have tips to help you dive in and navigate the wonderful world of color!

Your first step is to find your palette. If you don’t have one in mind, seeking inspiration is simple. Pinterest offers an endless stream of ideas to use throughout your house. Online color selectors are another great tool, as they let you create cohesive palettes from your favorite pictures. A statement piece, used as a focal point, easily provides a standard for the rest of your decor. Another guide to consider is how you want the area to feel. A room comprised of mostly dark tones will feel snug and cozy compared to lighter shades that offer a refreshing, airy atmosphere. With your hues selected, the next step is to decide the ratios you would like to use. Figure out your primary and accent colors, then balance them into a harmonious display.

Once you’ve picked a palette, it’s time to incorporate your colors. More common methods include repainting or using wallpaper, but if you rent your home or want the versatility of a blank canvas, these options may not work for you. A large tapestry or gallery of pictures allows you to spruce up a wall without the commitment to paint or wallpaper, and open shelving in your home provides more opportunities. Not only can the books, vases, and figurines on the shelf add impact, but you can also paint the back of your bookcase for extra depth. A candle on a side table, a bowl on the coffee table, potted plants, pillows, and blankets can be used throughout the area as more conduits for color, and rugs and curtains help tie the vision together. Bold furniture is the final piece of the puzzle. A stylishly upholstered couch or a beautifully crafted bed make excellent statement pieces that catch the eye from the moment you enter the room.

When decorating your home, remember that you’re designing your space and prioritize personal taste over passing trends. Your home should be a retreat you want to spend time in. If you’re drawn to colors that aren’t mainstream, make your own style. Truly custom designs may involve DIY projects, but don’t be afraid. The information age is on your side. Online tutorials exist for everything from beginner pieces to advanced projects, and most of them are free. Resources such as makerspaces are available at many libraries and county extension offices, lending the proper tools to get the job done without spending extra money or using additional storage. By thinking outside the box, you can have a retreat that’s perfectly curated to your preferences.

Adding color to your home, while potentially intimidating, isn't difficult. If you’re just starting to dip your toes, don’t feel obligated to jump into the deep end with a tidal wave of different shades and hues. A little can go a long way, but don’t be afraid to get creative and make your space your own.
